These rural villages are rich in heritage and tradition, but poor in many ways that we take for granted in other parts of the world. Barapur is not an anomaly in it's lack of sewer system, clean water supply, roadways, access to electricity, and other basic infrastructure. Sangrock Youth Empowerment Initiative is working to advocate the government to build these systems within the village. We are also endeavoring to educate the villagers and create awareness for basic hygiene practices that will aid in every day life.

The villagers have naturally been wary of people coming "from America" and wanting to make changes to the way things have always been done. They hear about our goals of roadways, sewer systems, and clean water and they accuse us of building castles in the clouds. We have had our feet on the ground there for the last fifteen years, first establishing a Taekwondo school and then the Ekta center in order to show our commitment to remaining in the village. We cannot do what we hope to accomplish without the trust and confidence of the villagers themselves. We have recently made significant gains in their confidence after an invitation was offered to and accepted by a representative of the leading state political party. She made the journey to the village and saw the condition and the needs of its residents. She heard their concerns as well as the goals we have for the village and she voiced her support. The confidence of the villagers was won and they are now excited and hopeful for what the future can hold.
